The trend with many Internet Marketers is to focus their advertising efforts on the newsfeed rather than the right hand side because of higher click through rates and lower CPC and CPM.

Facebook is aware this is happening and are in the process of rolling out a change to the right hand side Ad unit to have a larger image size so as to encourage marketers to utilise it more so that the newsfeed doesn’t become ‘uncool’.

Facebook advised recently “The new look of the ads, along with their new distribution, is intended to offer a better ad experience on Facebook. In early tests we’ve seen increased engagement — up to 3X more — from people seeing the new design.

Because the updated ads mirror the overall shape of desktop News Feed ads, marketers will no longer have to choose separate images for News Feed and right-hand column placements. They can now use the same image for both.”
